Their soft bleating and the murmuring of the breezes across the lone tree on the hilltop were his constant co-dwellers. Day in day, watching over his charges inculcated in him a feeling of calm satisfaction.
Yet, there were occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. On one such day because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a troublesome scheme.
Stories of wild beasts preying on sheep had long been circulating in the village. So, the boy opted to used this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.
One day he dashed into the village screaming “Wolf! A wolf is that has taken my sheep!” The scared villagers ran up the hills for rescue but saw no wolf.
The boy laughed at the confusion on their faces. This game continued for a few more days. But, one noon, a real wolf actually come to prey check here the herd. The shepherd boy dashed for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but could protect only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he went back to the village only to receive a scolding on honesty and the consequences of crying wolf.
The story of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once violated, is tough to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was then.
